Each year I love to start up this thread to see where everyone is coming from. Instructurecon has become such a great international event over the past few years.
4 years ago I attended my first and I was one of only three from Australia. Last year saw over a dozen.
And it is not just Australia. Now they come from all over Europe, Asia, the Middle East and even Canada (I was informed that it is NOT a northern US state or America's Top Hat last visit).
So, where are you from? Are you road tripping in from the east coast? Flying in from the west? Travelling by husky from the north or swimming in from over the seas?
This thread gives a chance to not only share your port of origin but also will allow you to connect with others from the same region. Maybe you can also connect up at Instructureconcarn and make some new connections.
I will start, for those who don't already know I am based in Sydney Australia (you know, the country where everything is trying to kill you) and have been a long time Canvas user, advocate and now staff member.
Looking forward to reconnecting with all those I have met over the years and keen to meet all those I haven't.
OK, now it is your turn. Post your origin here and tag 3 others to do the same. Let's see just how many we can get here.
Julian
Hello @emaster002 Welcometo the Canvas Community! You have found a thread about InstructureCon, the annual conference for Canvas and Bridge. I am so glad to hear you are using Canvas and if you are looking for some more information about the product, or this Community, I recommend our Getting Started page or you can just post something in our Find Answers space. It is great to have you with us and I look forward to seeing you around!
I'm from Liaoning Province of China.
Wow! It is exciting to have people coming from China!
I'll be coming from University of California, Davis. Flying out of Sacramento, CA!
Daytona Beach Florida. On vaca as classes begin however I'll be back in Minneapolis soon!
While I work at the University of Washington in Seattle, I will be flying in from my home in Rainbow Beach on the East Coast of Australia, about 15 hours drive north of where Deactivated user is from. Julian, looking forward to our annual catch up event 🙂 Yes, working remotely from a beach in Oz is a pretty great gig! I should also mention that this will be my 6th InstructureCon.
We met last year, Sir. I didn't remember your name, but I remembered your story because I was so jealous of your working situation.
It will be great to see you again, if that works out.
Kelley
If we can find each other @kmeeusen , that would be great!
Randy,
I am including this more serious and professional picture of Kelley so that you will find it easier to find him in Keystone.
Cheers
Yeppers, that's me, but I typically do not wear the suit at InstCons!
Hi orwinr - I'm from Brisbane so not too far from you. My parents lived at Rainbow in the 70s - one of our favourite family holiday spots 🙂 Looking forward to meeting you!
Hi @kerri ,
Good to hear another Queenslander is attending 🙂 We should definitely try and meetup to chat about what you are doing with Canvas. Did you teach in Queensland? My wife, Lindy, formerly Lindy Mckeown, used to work in central office for Education Queensland in the learning technologies area. I don't remember what her job title was, but you might have known her from those days.
We love living at Rainbow, but it is a bit remote at times. At least we will have NBN in August. Fingers crossed that it all goes well when they start turning it on.
I'll be flying in from Orlando with @karen_tinsley-k , jawahar, keegan.berry, and a few others. You can spot me pretty easily since I'll have a UDOIT sign on my backpack! This will be my 6th InstructureCon (my first one was in 2013).
As she mentioned before, I'll be presenting with Karen Tinsley-Kim and @mtuten on how Clemson is using UDOIT. I'll also be at Hack Night collecting feedback and maybe even working on the tool a bit.
I look forward to seeing everyone!
Speaking of backpacks, I still laugh when headed toward security area of DEN to go home in 2016 and looked down and it was a sea of orange backpacks! LOL I still use that thing. And then bought another, exact same model but in blue.
It's my daily go to work bag, fits my laptop and lunch perfectly!
Same here. It's my daily driver! We had folks who attended for the first time last year and were lamenting that there was no backpack swag.
Yeah, but a really cool jacket. Sort of 'stealth' Canvas ... I wear mine during all 8-days of fall we get in Florida ...
Yeah, that jacket was much better than the disposable ponchos the year before. And, nice that the branding on it was "stealth" , so you can wear it out without being an obnoxious billboard.
I think I've had my fill of being an obnoxious billboard.
I ended up never getting to see last year's Swag! What did the jacket look like?
Hey Beth,
They were light windbreaker shells in matte black with (I think) "Instructurcon" written along one arm.
Sweet.
Coming from the great city of Chicago! Second time but first time presenting with Travis Avertt on how DeVry University has used Canvas to launch our Center for Teaching Excellence and badge 2500 + faculty. Excited to LEARN, SHARE and GROW with you all!
New user from SE United States. Learning and creating at the same time. Any hints for new users?
Vancouver, BC, very much at sea level. Pretty sure this is Instcon #6 for me. I'm with Simon Fraser University. AFAIK we're still the largest high-ed open-source Canvas installation. I'll be around all week and especially at hack night if anyone wants to chat about open-source!
YAY Vancouver!
Canada or Washington?
Oh yeah... haha. I thought I was replying to the gentleman from Simon Fraser University, also in beautiful Vancouver, BC, Canada!
(I've been to the US Vancouver... it is also beautiful)
Oh, Hi !
I'm coming from Seoul, South Korea.
I’ve been following along virtually for the past couple of years. So excited to be attending Instructurecon in person this year! I’m coming from Salinas California.
I am coming from Egypt ,cairo it is middle east .I hope to find anyone came from Egypt too.
This will be my first InstructureCarn and I am looking forward to it. I will be flying in from Arlington, VA.
I recently had a change of plans and will be attending my second InstructureCon this year. I can't wait! I'm coming from Foothill College in California's Bay Area.
Hi Heather, I lived in Los Altos and other Bay Area cities for ten years. Beautiful area but I missed New England (even the winters) and came back in 1985. I still have many friends in your area and try to get back to visit from time to time.
Hi Betty,
Small world. Welcome to the Canvas Community!
I am originally from Boston now living in New Hampshire. This is my first online class with TCM although I've been an avid viewer of TCM for as many years as it's been around. I am really enjoying the course so far! I appreciate all the hard work that has been put into making this possible.
@bettyljohn , welcome to the Canvas Community!! I'm not sure if you realized it or not, but you stumbled on a post about people who are attending InstructureCon (the Canvas user conference) this year. Glad to hear you are enjoying your course - Mad about Musicals I'm assuming - and I hope you get the opportunity to interact with others who have also been watching and enjoying TCM for years!
Kona
I have been to 3 InstructureCon's. I guess I drank too much of the kool-aid cuz now I'm an employee! This year I will be attending remotely from Flagstaff, AZ helping the amazing laurakgibbs (and others) pump up the volume to all the other remote participants. If you want to learn more about the remote experience this year read my latest blog, Come one, Come all! You should also check out Laura's amazing The InstCon Canvas Course Challenge! She has built an Instcon Remote Control course with all sorts of goodies in it!
I am flying in from Bellingham, Washington. I know there are quite a few of us Washingtonians attending! @kmeeusen & @christopher_me1 to name a couple!
Looking forward to seeing everyone again & meeting new friends.
