Y’all ready for a partay? I am! In fact, I’m packing my bags (yes, red nose and floppy shoes included) in prep for InstructureCarn in Keystone, CO. I was going to ask my buddy Josh (Mr. Coates to you, btw) if he’d share an Uber with me, but then I ‘bumped’ into Beth from #stepsforbeth. Turns out she’s going this year!
I missed catching up with her last year. For those who don’t know, days before her flight to InstructureCon 2017, she was hit with a super rare (1%) spinal stroke and was paralyzed from the waist down. Although we didn’t connect, I (along with many of my Canvas friends) followed her every step in her heroic journey back to health.
And just recently, she announced:
“Y'all....I got approval!!! Well 2 out of 4 of my medical team and my boss. With restrictions (i.e. wheelchair and must travel with someone who can assist me...family/friends are going to have to draw straws for this one).”
Of course, this made my giant panda heart happy. I first met <Beth> when she joined the Canvas Community in June of 2015. She’s a sharer (like me) and posts all sorts of goodies in the Community. We connected at InstructureCon 2015. I was just chillaxin’ by the tents, feeling all “kumbayawesome,” when (click!) she took this beautiful picture (Snapchat wasn’t really a thing back then).
We’ve been BFFs ever since.
But, I digress.
In hopes to re-create another memorable photo op with Beth, I will track my #stepsforbeth en route to Instructurecon 2018 (that’s 456.69 miles of dedication!). I’m going to use my paws (and since I have 4 of them, my steps will add up quickly. Sorry, humans) to track each step!
Will you join me?
This year I’ll start tracking my steps in stridekick and I can invite 100 of my Canvas friends to join me, virtually.
Here are the deets:
Can I just say, “I love this community!” (Okay, now I’m going to start crying). But seriously, it’s not just about being Canvas users, but offering up your experiences that end up bringing out your passions, your humanity, and your deep friendships.
See you ‘clowns’ in Keystone!
Okay you disgusting furry freak (panda), you can thank the persistent stefaniesanders for convincing me to download GoogleFit to my phone, and joining the party. You can expect me to complain bitterly before, during and after every hobbling step I take! And you better believe I would not have done this for anybody less than @BethCrook !
I can hear it now, "Oooooo look at the silly old curmudgeon trying to get all healthy and stuff!"
And furthermore, YOU ARE WORTH EVERY BIT OF IT, BETH!
Kelley
I had a stroke, what's your excuse?
Man, @BethCrook ! Still at it! (I say with a smile on my face!)
Wait until someone makes a complaint about their foot falling asleep.
Wait, feet fall asleep? Do they snore? That could be so embarrassing!
I'm old and lazy!
And I know you had a stroke, which is why I am joining in the fun despite my tendencies to slothdom!
Well I am required to focus on lifting my feet when you walk, but I won't make any jokes about you shuffling yours along side me
And everyone be careful walking along 215! There's some crazy drivers on that road!
I signed up...
Hey, are you stalking me, @BethCrook ?
Actually, this is much closer to how I look when I walk.................
Selfie time!
I made it to Midvale, UT so far! Checked in with the Community Team, and to quote my friend @kmeeusen "Yippee Skippee", we've had more friends join us since I took off this morning! (Kelley included!).
awilliams, ysmalls, @KristinL , & @Chris_Hofer ! Such a pandarific crew we have!
Docs team just showed up! Some of my favorite pandas!
erinhallmark, @ctitmus , allifoote, @nathanatkinson & @Allie_Dilts !
And there's rumor that CSM extraordinaire Deactivated user will be joining us. He'll leave me in the panda dust!
Get ready to eat Doc Team dust, Panda!
Also everyone should panda-shame eallen for not joining us.
Hey! Someone's gotta drive the support vehicle so Panda has bamboo.
eallen you're my new favorite human!
Let's do this thing!!!
Signed up and ready to go! Even though I am not leaving for Keystone for awhile the prep in packing will count right!!
Y'all are seriously making my day week month!
I'm in! Can't wait to breathe that fresh mountain air!
You and me both. This mid-atlantic smog fest is getting to me.
Count me in!
You're counted! Thanks!!
So my husband, partner-in-crime, biggest supporter and the initial creator of the StepsforBeth hashtag has joined in on our challenge! (he's not in the community) So if you see JasonCrook on the map, poke at him to get out from behind his desk and start walking!
Took my kids on a walk last night and told them about the StepsforBeth. They pushed the stroller so each of my steps would count!!
LOVE!!
On a serious note (grabbing the tissues), it's because of you all and THIS that I pushed myself and walked over a mile yesterday! So when I say every step counts, it's you all inspiring ME to get out of this wheelchair. The weather is climbing up into the mid-90s and humid through the weekend, so other than PT, I'll probably just be in my pool this weekend. Tomorrow we do the 3 hour round trip drive (leaving by 6am) to Baltimore, 2 hours in the PT gym and then 1 hour in the pool for underwater treadmill. If only my phone/watch could capture THOSE steps! Holy moly.
Thank you all for motivating me! I cannot say it enough!
Wow, friends, did you see this Instructure post: Stepping up the #stepsforbeth? I love this place!
...If you collectively make over 6 Million (another dramatic pause) steps over the 31 day challenge, Instructure will commit to providing a physical therapy machine that Beth has chosen to help her in her next steps of recovery!
I heard a couple hours ago that we've already stepped over 388,000 #stepsforbeth! I bet we can do this! I best get walkin'...
Wow!! This is amazing!!!
That is awesome.
This might be one of the coolest things I’ve seen the #community do! Yes!
Brilliant idea. I've been in New Zealand looking after my sick Mum and missed the Stepping Action.
I'm joining in now to step it up in Hobart!
Pleased to be involved and what a super idea.
I did a little calculating this morning and we came out of the weekend with a grand total of 1,409,519 steps! Woweee! Well done friends! Now it's time for me to rise and shine and meet day 6!

This is phenomenal!!
I think 6 million will be a very distant speck in the rear view mirror by the start of the conference.
No joke! I feel like I walk more than 6 million steps just during the 3 days of InstCon!!
This was me heading to the gym today. Clearly, I was too legit to quit :smileylaugh:
Anyone else wearing ratty old Canvas t-shirts to motivate them to get more #stepsforbeth?
