[Gradebook] Clear Student Gradebook symbols

The symbols used the teacher gradebook for complete, incomplete and excused are not clear in the student/observer view of grades.

Students and observers see a symbol that does not indicate define what the symbol means nor what score the student earned.  We have communicated this to students and families repeatedly, but because there is no symbol key, hover pop-up, etc, the grade remains unclear.

For example, in the attached screenshot:

  • EX is sort of clear as it is grayed out.
  • LATE is very clear and the score is clearly visible
  • MISSING is very clear and the score is clearly visible
  • The check mark is ambiguous both in terms of what it means and what score the student earned.  The student earned a 50/50, but there is no way for the student/observer to know this.
  • The X is also ambiguous both in terms of what is means and what score the student earned.  The student earned a 0/10 on this assignment, but there is no way for the student/observer to know that.  I couldn’t find a way to give a zero for the missing assignment so I finally marked it incomplete – but it is missing, not incomplete.
  • Allow complete/incomplete assignments the option to put a zero (instead of incomplete) and let the teacher set the numeric grade for incomplete (0, 1/2 credit, etc) so there is a clear grade visible in the gradebook.

Idea:  Use the ambiguous symbols in the teacher gradebook, but not in the student gradebook.  Write out the symbol as a word so it is clear and show the score as well.
