Restoring an old course over the 500 MB limit

I am at an institution that does not use Canvas, but I have used it in the past. I downloaded backups of my Canvas courses and would like to restore them to access the content on the Free for Teachers Canvas. However, I cannot import the course because it is over 500 MB. Is there any way around this, or am I out of luck? Thanks!

Hi @KatieGordon43, 

If you have exported Canvas courses in a standard format, you can actually examine the exported file(s) and you can delete course items from the exported file itself. It should be a zip file/compressed file type where you can open lots of different items, and you should be able to sort and see what you can potentially do without. You can then re-save and try again. Hope that helps.

It is a .imscc file. When I click on it, it just asks me what application to open it with, and right clicking gives no options like a .zip file would, like extract, etc. I guess this is the wrong type of file? Thanks!

As this Guide suggests (take a look at the information in the light blue box at the top of the page), you should be able to change the file extension on the *.imscc file to a *.zip file, and then you can unzip the file to look at the contents of it.  Then, you can do what @KevinMeredith had suggested.
