Multiple Due Dates for Discussion Redesign

For the discussion redesign, consider allowing instructors to assign multiple due dates within a discussion post—one for the original post and another for the replies. These due dates will also benefit students as they will appear on their to-do lists.

This feature is already on the Roadmap to be developed.  The name is the feature is called "Checkpoints" and is currently scheduled for release in Q1.

With the recently released video that reviews the redesign of the Discussions tool, I had hoped that this Checkpoint feature would be included. Unfortunately, it is not, nor any other solution to this need for multiple due dates in the Discussions. Can you please let us know any updates on this?

This update did not address the multiple due dates at all.  The way it's set up is to allow different due dates for different students NOT to have multiple checkpoints for a discussion.  It's like they entirely missed the point of how discussions work. The goal is not to have different people talking at different times but to have students talking back and forth with each other.

Hi @wakimsu,

To add some clarity, the "assign to" changes are not the same as checkpoints.  I think Instructure originally hoped to release checkpoints before the Discussion Redesign enforcement in July, but a couple months ago posted that the checkpoints were delayed to Q3 2024, see  Check in on Checkpoints - Instructure Community - 605148  for more info.  So, the good news is that Instructure knows what they have released so far is not checkpoints, but the bad news is that you may have to wait a month or two more for checkpoints to come out, assuming all of the development and testing goes well.

Oh, OK - thank you.  I saw the current update and panicked thinking that they thought this was what we meant. I agree with the posts saying they should have waited until this was ready. But, at least they don't think this was what we were actually asking for 😅
