Portfolium orientation activities?

Hi All!

I need some help from the hive mind.

I want to create an orientation activity (or set of activities) for learners (students/faculty/staff). The primary objective is to provide 2-3 modules that faculty can copy into a Canvas course and use as a How-To type of activity/assignment that students need to complete in order to progress through a "class." (Though our Canvas use is not standardized and is usually used for syllabi and office information. Full courses taught using Canvas are rare.)

In order to provide adequate exposure to the ways Portfolium can be accessed (mediated through Canvas and directly), I have identified this approach:

  1. An activity where learners claim their Portfolium, perform 2-3 basic tasks in Portfolium, and then submit the Portfolium link in the assignment within Canvas.
  2. A document upload activity where learners create a Word document (i.e. use a Word resume template, fill in some basic information, and save) and then upload the document to Portfolium through Canvas. (The only way I can find to make this happen involves Assessment Activities in Portfolium.)

Does this approach make sense? Or is there a more elegant way to achieve the goal of familiarizing learners with Portfolium in a way that faculty can integrate into their courses?

Thanks and regards,
Lance

Hello @yotebrarian

Thank you for posting in the Community!

I think your idea sounds like a great way to familiarizing learners with Portfolium or as it is now known, Canvas Student ePortfolios, and let me know what ways that you have done this as it would be a great resource for other Community members searching this same topic.

In your provided approach, I would be glad to clarify with the guides that we would have for these processes:

  1. An activity where learners claim their Portfolium(Canvas Student ePortfolio), perform 2-3 basic tasks in Portfolium, and then submit the Portfolium link in the assignment within Canvas.

The act of claiming would be signing up for a free account inside Canvas Student ePortfolios. Here is a guide for students for signing up for a free account: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Canvas-Student-ePortfolios/How-do-I-sign-up-for-a-Canvas-Student-...

If users have the Folio LTI installed in Canvas, they should be able to access their account through the Folio LTI. If they create an account through the Folio LTI, it should be creating an account with their Canvas email.

Once they have an account in Canvas Student ePortfolios, we want to have them connect their Canvas account to the Canvas Student ePortfolio account in their account settings.

Here is a guide for that: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Canvas-Student-ePortfolios/How-do-I-connect-Canvas-to-my-Canvas-S...

Once they have connected their Canvas account, they should be able to import assignments from Canvas (guide) https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Canvas-Student-ePortfolios/How-do-I-import-assignments-from-Canva...

The basic tasks they could perform would be adding things to their profile to give it more depth. Here are some guides for adding things to our profile:
    Edit Overview Information: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Canvas-Student-ePortfolios/How-do-I-edit-my-overview-information...
    Add an Introduction: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Canvas-Student-ePortfolios/How-do-I-add-an-introduction-to-my-pro...
Add Courses to my Profile: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Canvas-Student-ePortfolios/How-do-I-add-courses-to-my-profile/ta-...

Submitting their profile link would be done by visiting their profile, and copying the link they see there or by sharing their private profile link if they have their profile set to be private. Viewing Profile guide: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Canvas-Student-ePortfolios/How-do-I-view-my-profile/ta-p/1412
Student accounts are created as private by default, so if we are having them share their profile, we want to have them check their privacy settings to enable other users to view their profile, or share the private profile link. We can have them check their privacy settings by following these steps: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Canvas-Student-ePortfolios/How-do-I-change-my-privacy-settings-in...

  2. A document upload activity where learners create a Word document (i.e. use a Word resume template, fill in some basic information, and save) and then upload the document to Portfolium through Canvas. (The only way I can find to make this happen involves Assessment Activities in Portfolium.)

This document upload could be done with a file submission type assignment in Canvas. However to be able to have them submit to their Portfolium account through Canvas would require the Course Assessment feature and linking the Course Assessment to your Canvas Course. Guide: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Portfolium-Resource-Documents/Portfolium-Assessment-Linking-Cours...

We have had institutions do this without using Assessments by way of public projects. The student can submit the project URL to an assignment with a URL submission type assignment in Canvas.

For this submitted project to be visible to the teacher, it needs to be made public however, so we want to clarify that to students when creating the project to submit in Canvas for a teacher to see.

We would appreciate if you could share any questions or comments about any of these processes and we would be glad to answer any questions about these as well!
