Canvas Deploy Notes (2021-07-07)
Canvas deploys contain code changes that are intended to fix bugs, improve performance, and prepare for new features, but they do not affect customer workflows. These deploys take place every two weeks and can be tested in the beta environment before the production deploy date indicated in the title of this document. Intended changes in workflow are noted in the Canvas Release Notes published monthly.
Deploy notes may include notable fixed bugs, resolved fixes in Known Issues, and other updates that do not affect user functionality.

Gradebook
Gradebook CSV Column Order
Summary
The Gradebook CSV assignment columns display in the same order as shown in the Gradebook for an individual user.
Change Benefit
This change fulfills expectations for users and aligns the Gradebook view and CSV file.
Affected User Roles
Instructors
When an instructor or other grader customizes the Gradebook assignment columns and downloads the CSV file, the CSV file assignment columns display in the same order as shown in the user’s Gradebook. Previously CSV files were always ordered by Assignment Group ID and Assignment Order.

Pages
Mark as Done Button Placement
Summary
The Mark as Done button for students has been moved to the bottom of the page.
Change Benefit
This change aligns consistency through other Canvas areas and places the button in a more intuitive location.
Affected User Roles
Students
When students are required to read a page and mark it as done, the Mark as Done button has been moved to the bottom of the page. The button can be marked more easily after students have reached the bottom of the page. Previously users must scroll back up to the top of the page to mark the page as done.
Related Idea Conversation: Please Move the "Done" Marker to the Bottom of the Page
Permissions
Manage Courses Permission Adjustments
Summary
The Manage Courses granular permissions includes the Reset Course permission. Additionally, for admin roles, the Manage/Update permission has been removed from the group as a standalone permission.
Change Benefit
These changes resolve confusion between various permissions functionality.
Affected User Roles
Admins
Within the Manage Courses permission at both the account and course levels, the granular permission group includes the Courses - Reset permission. Previously the course reset functionality was included in the Courses - Delete permission.
This permission will be set to the same access as the Courses - Delete permission (e.g. if the permission is disabled, Courses - Reset will also be disabled). Admins can customize both of these granular permissions as needed.
At the account level, the Manage/Update permission has been removed from the group as a standalone permission as Courses - Manage / Update. This change allows the granular Manage Courses permission to be edited for course roles the same way as all other granular permission. Previously for individual course roles, each permission within the group had to be managed individually—all permissions in the group could not be updated at the same time.
Related Idea Conversation: Add a Checkbox to Disable Reset Course Content
Reports
ePortfolio Login IDs
Summary
Login ID and SIS ID field are included in the ePortfolio report.
Change Benefit
This change allows admins to view login information for ePortfolio users.
Affected User Roles
Admins
When admins configure the ePortfolio report, author_sis_ID and author_login_id fields are included in the report CSV file. The SIS ID field will be populated only if the user has an SIS ID.
Rich Content Editor
Media Uploads Alt Text Adjustments
Summary
The Upload Media window allows the name of the file to be changed before the file is added to the Rich Content Editor.
Change Benefit
This change allows a file name to be updated without having to remove the file, rename the file, and upload the file again. The name of the file generates the alt text used by screen readers.
Affected User Roles
All Users
When a file is selected for a media upload and the preview is generated, a text field displays below the preview with the name of the file. The file can be renamed before the file is submitted and uploaded in the Rich Content Editor.

Assignments
Empty Assignment Description Content
Summary
The default text has been updated for description content that is blank.
Change Benefit
This change helps minimize confusion for students regarding descriptions with no content.
Affected User Roles
Students
When an assignment is created with no description, the assignment displays to students as: No additional details were added for this assignment. Previously the content read as No Content.
Permissions
Sidebar Formatting Updates
Summary
Formatting has been updated in the Permissions sidebar.
Change Benefit
This change provides better scannability among permissions content.
Affected User Roles
Admins
The Permissions sidebars include additional white space for improved scannability and separation between permissions functionality. Additionally, the What it Does and Additional Considerations headers have been changed to all caps instead of title case.

The Question points field in SpeedGrader and the Quiz submission history include labels for screen readers.

Assignments
Assignment Enhancements and Rubrics
When Assignment Enhancements is enabled in a course, On Paper and No Submission types display the View Rubric option for students.
Explanation: When Assignment Enhancements was enabled in a course, and a rubric was set for grading for an On Paper or No Submission assignment type, the View Rubric option did not display to the student. Canvas code has been updated to display the View Rubric option for students.
SpeedGrader
Reassign Assignment Button and Student Annotation Submissions
The Reassign Assignment button is supported in Student Annotation submissions.
Explanation: When a Student Annotation submission was created for a student, and the student submitted an assignment, the Reassign Assignment button was not available in SpeedGrader. Canvas code has been updated to allow Student Annotation Submissions to support the Reassign Assignment button.
