Hey all..
I'm planning the orientation for new students at my university and wondering if Canvas can handle different groups for each campus.
We have two campuses, and I’d like to tailor the experience a bit for each location. Is it possible in Canvas? If yes, how can I do it?
Hi @CherylGoh,
I believe that this would involve behind-the-scenes work related to how you enroll students into a Canvas course like this.
If you are trying to do it programmatically, you would need to query your "systems" before involving Canvas and find out what students are taking classes at which campus. Based on those results, you would enroll students into the appropriate Canvas orientation course.
Another option that I can think of would be to do self-enrollment but that requires: (1) enabling that functionality, (2) advertising the Canvas orientation course at each campus, and (3) then students enrolling themself into the appropriate Canvas orientation course.
Maybe others have other ideas but those are what comes to my mind.

Hey @CherylGoh
Oh, totally! Canvas can handle different groups for each campus. You can create Sections in the course, one for each campus, and then assign different content or activities to each section.
Umm, to set it up, go to Settings > Sections, add a section for each campus, and then you can, like, assign students to their campus section. When you make assignments or modules, you can pick which section gets what.
Does that kinda setup work for what you’re going for? Or do you need it to be even more customized?
@CherylGoh, @dbrace and @jayell have sound suggestions.
We have something similar with an induction course at three campuses, and also separated by DL or F2F and apprenticeships.
Essentially we simplify it by appending the relevant characteristics within the course title, and enrol the students according to those core characteristics. The base site is the same, and then specific areas are updated for travel, campus maos etc.
Do be careful that for very broad cohorts you are operating within the privacy requirements for your jurisdiction.
