I tried on three browsers: Chrome, Safari and Firefox; disabled ad blocks and tried again, enabled University Cisco VPN and retried but to no avail. Every time I try reloading, it says:
Service is currently unavailable. Try again later.
No idea why this is happening.
Some details:
I am outside of the University Eduroam network, using a private ISP. The usual canvas pages load but it's unable to save annotation even if the grading pdf interface loads after multiple attempts. One time it threw nginx error along with 503.
I see that the Canvas interface has updated a bit since I last visited it about 10 days back.
Any solution to this to keep it from being a persistent problem?

@sgoswam You may try again, there was an issue with the SpeedGrader causing 503 issues that was recently resolved.
