Role in Canvas for people to submit discussions, not assignments?

Is there a course role in Canvas that would allow people to post in discussions but not submit graded assignments?

Out of the box, it doesn't seem like such a role exists. People are either Observers (which have view-only access to the course, and thus can't post in discussions) or Students (who can submit graded assignments).

If this role doesn't exist out of the box, could I create it by creating a new role with custom permissions? What permissions would I need to set?

To solve this, I created a custom Course Role called Auditor based off the Observer role, but I gave it the following additional permissions:

- Conversations: Send messages to individual course members
- Discussions: post (already had Discussions: view)
