Greetings,
Happy new year! I hope everyone had a great holiday week.
I am a Canvas course admin for a higher ed institution working with many specialized cohorts.
We just noticed that learners of one section are missing all their quiz grades - we are unsure why. We recently updated their roles from 'Learner' to a custom instructor role with more permissions after they graduated. Would this have wiped their quiz results? Their completed assignments are still showing, however.
1. If we revert these learners back to the 'Learner' role temporarily, could we retrieve those quiz grades?
2. Is it possible to revert the course to a previous version temporarily to retrieve those grades? Just like how on Windows PC you can boot to an earlier date to retrieve files you deleted.
We use these analytics to assess cohort performance and to give students feedback. We hope we can retrieve them!
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi @dal3008
Teachers/Instructors do not have grades showing in the grade book. Switching the role from one based on Learner/Student to one based on Teacher will cause the grades to disappear.
The good news is that the grades are no gone, and can be retrieved by changing the role back to a Learner/Student role. This can be done temporarily.
There isn't really an option for reverting the course back to a "previous version", but you may want to try looking in your "beta" environment to see a copy of the course before the weekly update from the production update (https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Canvas-Releases/What-is-the-Canvas-beta-environment/ta-p/255260 )

Hi @dal3008
I have a few test courses where I have switched my test users back and forth between teacher and student roles many times (depending on what I was testing in the course), and I've not seen any issues with the functionality of the course itself as a result of changing the user role.
I agree with @mzimmerman there shouldn't be any functional issue with changing the roles back and forth. @dal3008, I am really curious as to why you're changing roles from a leaner-based one to a teacher-based one after graduation though. That seems a bit unusual to me. I'm always looking to expand my knowledge in case something similar ever comes up at my institution, so I'd be curious to know more about the reason for this role change.

Hi @mzimmerman
I was wondering if you had advice: We just reverted these learners back to the Student role - but on some quizzes this cohort of students is not showing on Item and Student Analysis Reports, yet for some quizzes they are, despite individual student quiz results available.
For example, these learners are showing on a quiz's Student Analysis Report but not on that same quiz's Item Report. Do you have any ideas? Perhaps the servers need time to refresh?
Thank you in advance.
Hi @dal3008
I'm afraid I don't have a whole lot of knowledge about the analytics, but I do know that it takes some time to generate new/updated reports. Perhaps you are pulling a cached/previously generated Item Report?
I am not sure how you would trigger the generation of a new report. You may want to open a ticket with Canvas Support.
