Mastery Paths Alternative?

Our institution has two courses that use Mastery Paths in one module. We have two issues coming up. The first is that in one course using it, all of the assignments in that modules appear for all students in the gradebook instead of just the ones designated for their path. The second is that the links break for the assignments for all the assignments in the mastery path after a student takes the quiz that directs them to the activities that they are to do.
Since Mastery Paths appears to be broken and the video on how to set up Mastery Paths is not going to be updated and is currently outdated are we to assume that Mastery Paths is no longer an option?
Canvas has allowed for differentiated assignments where only certain students can be assigned to them (if I am reading the assignment page correctly when in Edit mode). If this is the case, could I put assignments into a module with due dates, but then manually specify which students need to do which assignment? And if they have due dates and show in the gradebook, will it cause penalties for the students not assigned to the work?
Is there a better way?
