Lock a grade but allow students to retake activity

I want to allow students to go back and retake an activity, but doing so seems to update their grade to their most recent attempt. Is it possible to "lock" or set a condition on a grade to something like taking their best attempt, or first attempt?

Hello, Thomas! What are you using for this activity? Is it a New Quiz? An assignment? Other?

If you are in a new quiz, then you are able to give the students multiple attempts (including forcing a waiting period between attempts if you'd like). Once you enable that in the settings, it asks you which score you want reported/kept. I attached a screenshot of the options. So, choosing First would keep their original score intact in the gradebook while allowing them to repeat the new quiz.

Thank you! The activities are assignments, and they are interactive content from a vendor we access through an LTIA integration. 

Is the route you suggested only possible with quizzes?

Yes, unfortunately that particular thing is specific to New Quizzes. In an assignment you can offer multiple attempts, but as you've already discovered, it registers the last score and you have to toggle back to the original attempt to get that. Sorry. 😞
