For this question it might be better to contact Canvas support. It sounds like there is a specific submission type set on the assignment you are trying use in Canvas.
Assignments in Canvas have a few option as far as how you can submit to them.
Online: This submission type is used for uploading files, using the text entry box you are probably used to seeing, and submitting media recordings like videos and audio.
No Submission: This submission type is used if the instructor is not requiring you to submit anything to the assignment.
On paper: This submission type much like No Submission, except it allows the instructor to grade assignments you submit in person to them.
External tool. This submission type is used if your instructor is asking you to submit using an third party tool like Google Drive or Office 365.
If you are supposed to submit something using the text entry option on the assignment and cannot, you can try to contact your instructor, or reach out to canvas support to have them take a look into this issue. How do I contact Canvas Support?
