Grading Quizzes

Is it possible to grade a quiz myself without making every question an essay question?

What kind of quiz are you looking to give to your students?  What types of questions are in the quiz?  Multiple Choice, True/False, Essays, etc.?  Generally speaking, any type of question (such as essay) that has students typing in various responses will need to be graded by you.  Objective type questions (Multiple Choice, True/False, etc.) can be graded by Canvas automatically.

Hi Chris,

It's actually an assessment where students answer multiple choice questions and then an essay question to summarize their results. I first set it up as a graded survey and then saw "students will automatically receive full credit once they take the survey", which they may not receive full credit depending on their summary. Then I created a graded quiz with multiple answers set at 0 points and an essay question set at 10 points. However, the multiple answer option wants a correct answer so I marked they could all be correct, but then the student's quiz results show partial credit and I think that will cause some confusion. So, I was thinking it would be easiest if I could just grade it myself but couldn't find a way to do that. I also thought about making them all essay questions and just typing in the options for the multiple choice questions but thought I would come here first to see if there is a workaround.

Amy - I am not sure what you mean about partial credit on multiple answer multiple choice questions that you assign 0 points to.  Because it is worth 0 points the students will receive 0 points.  If it is the fact that students will see the answer they marked as correct, but all the others are marked as wrong because they were selected.  

The way you describe multiple questions worth 0 points and the essay question worth 10 points is the way I would have recommended.  If the issue with this set up is that the students don't select all the correct answers, then a different approach may be needed.

I will have to say that without knowing what you are doing with the questions on the quiz, the way you described the quiz is intriguing - you don't care about the questions worth 0 points and then you want everything in the essay question to be graded.   I am not sure what the 0 point questions are for - unless it is to provide information to the students to use when answering the essay question.

I know it's confusing! Thanks for the reply, it sounds like I can't just grade a quiz myself so that's what I needed to know.
