Grade Book - Automatic Grading

Our Education system requires the classroom teacher to form an on balanced assessment of the student based on performance standards. As a result the 'automatic grade' may not actually reflect the students end of assessment period grade, its is not as simple as looking at the highest grade or an average. As an administrator is there a way to turn off for all courses the calculated overall grade and just show each individual assessment and its result?

If you don't want teachers to be able to override the template, you could use the custom css or javascript options in the theme editor to disable/hide the checkbox on the course settings page.

Hi @DylanMuzyka,

There is a course level feature option to hide gradebook totals (canvas guide for hiding totals).  If you're using a paid version of Canvas, you could use the course template feature to set that option up in a template course and then set that course as the template for your account.  If you do that, ay new courses created in your account would inherit the settings of your template (including the hiding of grade totals).  Individual teachers could still re-enable he option at their choosing, and current courses wouldn't change automatically, but I think this would get you partially to where you want to go.

Thank you for your prompt response. 
We are looking at a whole school solution. The templates sound good but the ability for someone at teacher level to override a school wide approach does not suit. Thanks for your assistance

Also interested in this issue. I am not against this calculation method, but my colleagues are interested. Students must constantly monitor their grades because it motivates them to study more and not procrastinate. I have been following this problem for a long time, and I like how authors at https://phdessay.com/free-essays-on/procrastination/ write about this problem in their essays on procrastination. Therefore, I consider it my duty as a teacher to rid students of the habit of postponing everything for later because if it interferes with their studies now, then in the future, it will continue at work.

I don't know of any simpler options at this point.  We have various javascript lines in place (https://github.com/cmcasey79/canvas-customizations-by-chris) for our instance to lock down some of the course settings which we don't want teachers to change.  In some cases you can use permissions to alter what's available, but the there is nothing built-in that allows granular control over the individual settings.  I'm a big proponent of granular permissions, but I recognize that even with more granular permissions there is going to be some kind of limit on what gets built in to the system, and I wouldn't expect this one to be part of the base Canvas setup because it's likely going to be very rarely used.
