Hello-
I have set up my courses (as Admin) so that students enroll in the course via email invite. I have not set a join code for any courses. One of my users (a teacher) has asked that I set a join code for her students because they have a Canvas account with a local school district and are having issues accessing Canvas courses that are outside their district.
Questions:
Thank you.

Oh you're talking about the account creation through a join code. Yes, that has to be enabled at account level since you're using that to create Canvas accounts for these students.
Join codes are just another method of joining a course that can be enabled. Future students can be enrolled through the join code/enrollment link, by inviting them from the People page, or through SIS importing or API calls.
These actions are NOT mutually exclusive. By enabling one you're not disabling any other way someone could enroll a student into a course (given that they have the correct permissions to do so). The join code just makes it easier for students to enroll themselves into a course, without having to ask the teacher or put in a support ticket, etc.
1) If you're talking about the Join code/self-enroll link, no, that can only be enabled at the course level.
2) No, it will not mess up current enrollments in the course. All the join code does is allow students to enroll into the course.
Hope this helps!
So the students who were invited w/o a join code will be able to accept invites as is? Some haven't yet accepted the course invite. I'm worried that I will get a flurry of emails from students asking for a join code ;).
Yes, that's correct. Those students should still be able to go to their dashboards and accept the invite from the notification that they will get.
Ok. Now another question. I have to enable the join code at the account level (per Canvas help). Our program offers so many other courses. If I enable join codes, will this be the SOLE way users enroll? Will future students need to enroll in the class via a join code only?

Wonderful. That is what I wanted to be extra sure about. 🙂 Thank you for the hand-holding and assurance. -Grazia
