Automatically marking external tool assignments as missing

Is there a way for external tool assignments to automatically be marked as missing when the due date passes and no submission has been made? I currently spend a lot of time manually typing “mi” on each one. I’d love to know if there is an easier way!
I know that the Canvas system has to be aware of when an external submission is made because it removes it from their to-do list. Is there some way to connect that information so that a lack of submission marks it missing?

Unfortunately the missing policy does not apply to external tool assignments as specified in the guides. This is because the submission is made outside of Canvas and there isn't a way for Canvas to verify that the submission was made as LTI assignments tend to only send the grade for an assignment.
