Problem statement:

Many students prefer names other that what is listed on their official registration. Sometimes that is as simple as a preferred shortening of their name or a name that they have chosen for other reasons.

Proposed solution:

Create an optional feature implemented at the class or admin level. Allow students to change their screen name in a class to a preferred name. Create instructor tools to moderate names or restrict students ability to change their name. Automatically filter out inappropriate words (profanity, slurs, etc.) Optionally create an instructor approval system to approve of names before they are accepted.
