[Peer Review] Enhancing Canvas Peer Review Functionality for Continuous and Independent Auto-Assignment

Problem statement

Current Feature Limitation: The Canvas system only assigns peer reviews automatically at the specified Due or Assign Reviews date and time for an assignment. This presents several issues:
  1. Delayed Peer Review Process: Students can only start reviewing peers' assignments after the due date, delaying feedback and learning opportunities.
  2. Manual Intervention Required: Instructors must manually assign peer reviews each time a student submits an assignment after the due or assign reviews date, adding administrative burden even when the automated assignment feature has been set up.
  3. Submission Dependency: The system requires both the reviewer and the reviewee to have submitted their assignments for peer review assignments to be made automatically. A manual assignment is required if either party has not submitted something.

Faculty Requests:

  1. Continuous Auto-Assignment: Our faculty are expressing they would like their student peer reviews to be assigned automatically and continuously as soon as students submit their assignments, not just after the due or assign reviews date.
  2. Reduced Manual Intervention: Faculty prefer an automated process that does not require them to manually assign peer reviews after each submission.
Proposed Solution & Rationale

Enhancing this feature would greatly benefit instructors teaching asynchronous online courses, where students work at different paces. Automated and timely peer-review assignments would ensure that all students receive feedback promptly by avoiding delayed peer-review assignments, thereby improving the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the review process.

  1. Continuous Auto-Assignment Feature:
    • It would be ideal to have the 'automatically assign peer reviews' feature assign peer reviews to students immediately upon submission of their assignment, regardless of the due or assign reviews date.
    • Implement a real-time or near-real-time assignment process to ensure peer reviews are assigned promptly as students submit their work.
  2. Flexible Assignment Options:
    • Provide instructors with an option to specify the timing of peer review assignments (e.g., immediately upon submission, after a certain number of submissions, at a specific interval).
    • Provide the option for late submissions to also be automatically assigned peer reviews without requiring manual intervention from instructors.
  3. Independent Assignment Capability:
    • Update the system to allow peer reviews to be assigned even if the reviewee has not submitted their assignment.
    • Implement a logic that allows students who have not submitted their assignments to be assigned as reviewers. This logic should ensure that these students cannot view the assignments they need to review until they have submitted their own work. This logic seems to already exist in the manual assignment process and hopefully can be extended to automatic assignments.
  4. Enhanced Notification System:
    • Develop a notification system that alerts students and instructors when peer reviews are assigned and need to be completed.
    • Include options for instructors to set reminders for students to complete their assigned peer reviews.

Status changed to: Will Not Consider

Hi @SabrinaDean -

Thank you for taking the time and care to communicate the needs of the educators you support! Our Ideas & Themes process limits each thread to a single request, so as a whole, this thread is being moved to our Will Not Consider Status. The one idea per thread guidance makes it easier for our Product Team to align customer requests and stories to individual projects and the Roadmap.

What are the guidelines for submitting a new idea?

Many of the things you outlined on behalf of your colleagues are represented in existing ideas. I collected some of them for you to reference and to follow. Most of the ideas in the Community related to Peer Reviews have [Peer Review] at the front of the title, simplifying the search process.

You're welcome to author additional ideas to enhance Peer Reviews in ways that aren't included in the threads above. (You and your team have identified some amazing new possibilities!) We look forward to collaborating with you!
