[New Quizzes] General Feedback and Correct Answer Display
In Canvas Classic Quizzes, instructors could provide general feedback, including correct answers or model responses, for essay questions that students could view immediately upon submission, even before manual grading occurred. This functionality allowed students to compare their answers with a model answer right after submitting the quiz, fostering immediate reflection and learning. In New Quizzes, this capability is missing. General feedback, including model answers, is not displayed until after manual grading.
This creates two key issues:
- Delayed Learning Feedback: Students cannot immediately review their responses and compare them with the correct answer, delaying their opportunity for self-reflection and understanding.
- Increased Grading Burden: Instructors must manually grade all essay questions before students can view feedback, which is especially burdensome for large classes or when instructors prefer to use essay questions for self-assessment or practice rather than formal grading.
To address this issue, I propose the following updates to Canvas New Quizzes:
- General Feedback for Essay Questions Upon Submission: Enable general feedback, including correct/model answers, to be shown to students immediately after they submit the quiz, regardless of grading status. This feature should allow instructors to configure this behavior for individual questions.
- Complete/Incomplete Grading Option: Introduce a "complete/incomplete" grading mechanism for quizzes. This would automatically mark quizzes as "complete" if students respond to all questions, eliminating the need for manual grading when instructors prioritize participation and reflection over formal evaluation.
Why: These changes would restore the efficiency and pedagogical benefits available in Classic Quizzes, such as providing immediate learning feedback and reducing the grading workload for instructors. It would also support formative assessment workflows where instructors aim to foster student self-reflection and understanding without the constraint of manually grading every essay response. By implementing this solution, Canvas New Quizzes would better meet the needs of both instructors and students, aligning with modern educational practices that emphasize timely feedback and scalable assessment strategies.
