[Gradebook Settings] Fix Missing Submission Policy for Late Work
The "Automatically apply grade for missing submissions" setting is assigning students the score for a missing submission. That score stays even when a student submits work and so should have a grade of "ungraded." This means that students who turn in late work develop a sense that their Canvas grades are not accurate and lose trust in the Grades page as a helpful resource. Faculty manually removing the score is very time consuming and does not always work. In one weird instance, a student had a different grade for the assignment in Speedgrader from Grades even though the faculty had grades set to update automatically. The Speedgrader grade was the one calculated in the Total Grades. I'm not sure how widespread that particular issue is.
This is related to the issue described in [Gradebook Settings] Update the Late Policy Function but it is not the same issue or proposed solution.
The preferred solution would be that when students submit late work, the grade changes from that assigned by the Missing Submission Policy to Ungraded. Alternatively, if you could decide on a course level if the "Automatically apply grade for missing assignments" kicks in at the point the assignment is late or at the point the assignment can no longer be submitted, that would help this situation although it wouldn't be a great solution.
