[Discussions] Put Back in To Do List when Due Date Changes

Problem statement:

Discussion Assignments should have a feature that allows instructors to set multiple due dates for different parts of a single Discussion Assignment--to create a true discussion with multiple visits by students. I set up two parts to my Discussion Assignments, with the due date set for Part 1, then I change the due date for the Discussion Assignment for students to complete Part 2 of the same Discussion Assignment--that way there can be true interaction about material within a Discussion group. However, when I change the Due Date for the Discussion Assignment, the notification student's receive about the Due Date change is confusing. For those who have already visited the assignment and posted something, it is not necessarily clear that they should revisit unless they remember the directions they read in the assignment itself or pay attention to the notification I send them about this via canvas email. For those who haven't fully grasped the idea of two due dates for the same assignment requiring two visits and two postings, at two different times, they might think the first due date isn't important and wait until the last minute on the second due date to do Part 1 and Part 2 of the Discussion Assignment. This doesn't really fulfill the idea of an "exchange" happening. I grade these Discussion Assignments twice, once after the first due date, and again after the Discussion closes after the second due date. My postings in the first grading pass are something I want students to read and react to in their second visit. I also want the students to react to each other in the second posting, so the two separate visits at two different times by the students is important to the whole nature and idea of Discussion Assignments.

Proposed solution:

I would like a box to check when I make a Discussion Assignment that allows at least one of the following possibilities: 1) Put the Discussion Assignment back in the Student's To Do List when the due date has changed EVEN IF the student has already completed part of the assignment. A notification of due date change does not adequately prompt students to revisit the Discussion Assignment. But, having the option to have the assignment reappear on students' To Do List would prompt them to revisit more strongly. 2) Have a feature that allows multiple due dates for different parts of the same Discussion Assignment.

Status changed to: Will Not Consider

Hello!

Multiple Checkpoints is currently available as a Feature Option. Each school's Canvas admin can determine whether or not to have the option available for instructors to utilize in discussions.

With this, there are multiple due dates (checkpoints) for students. One for the initial reply and another for a required response!

Because this is available in Canvas as Feature Option, we're moving this idea to our Will Not Consider status to help our Product Team focus on other requests.
