[Discussions] Prompt instructor to check course setting when using "Users must post before seeing replies" setting

When faculty use the "Users must post before seeing replies" setting on a discussion, they intend for the student to post a meaningful post prior to seeing posts from other students.

However, if the course setting for "Let students edit or delete their own discussion replies" is enabled, students can (and do) post a blank or single letter post to get around the "Users must post before seeing replies" setting.

Please consider adding one of the following features to help faculty more easily recognize and plug this loophole:

  • Move the "Let students edit or delete their own discussion replies" from the course Settings page to be a discussion setting that can be configured on a per-discussion basis. The course Settings page could become a default setting for discussions instead.
  • Provide a prompt for instructors to check whether the "Let students edit or delete their own discussion replies" setting is enabled when they select the "Users must post before seeing replies" discussion setting

The first option would provide the most flexibility for faculty, and would be a great addition for the Discussion Redesign project that is underway. Thanks for considering!

Thank you for sharing this idea with the Instructure Community!

With the release of the Announcements/Discussions Redesign, the Product Team reviewed some related feature proposals, and unfortunately, this request was identified as one that they would not be able to include in their current or future plans. While we appreciate your proposal, we also want to be transparent about the likelihood of something like this making it to production.

Thank you for collaborating, and we hope that you submit another idea in the future!
