[Commons] Reporting Inappropriate Content

This idea has been developed and deployed to Canvas Commons

Problem statement:

One of our teachers reported a link to pornographic content in a course they downloaded from Canvas Commons. This was not uploaded to Commons from a member of our organization and it appears to be an honest mistake (it was uploaded years ago and it seems as if the domain was purchased and rerouted to an inappropriate website). Unfortunately the teacher hadn't fully vetted every assignment and link within the course (we are working on providing more training to our teachers so they know to vet everything coming from Commons, even in cases like this where it has a lot of 'favorites' and 'downloads'). We reported this to Canvas in the hopes of getting the item taken down, but they said they aren't able to without the authorization of the original poster who they are hoping can update it.

Proposed solution:

My suggestion is that Canvas includes a reporting feature in Commons for instances like this and reserves the right to take down material whether or not they have the permission of the original poster if it violates certain standards. It appears like an oversight that this material cannot be taken down and I believe this feature would greatly improve the safety of this product. Ideally teachers are vetting all content and links before downloading, but an added safety measure can help decrease the risk of content like this ever getting to students and teachers.
