[Assignments] Add Ability to Hide an Individual Student's Grade to Allow Re-Submission

Problem statement:

Recently, I gave a student a 0 on an assignment. After I graded all the student's submissions, I released all the grades (I use the Manual Grading policy). I permitted the student to resubmit the assignment. The student did. I started grading it in Speedgrader. I added annotations to the assignment. I did not finish; I got interrupted by an appointment. A couple hours later, the student submitted another version of it based on the comments I added to the first re-submission, even though I had not given it a grade through the rubric I use, had not saved the rubric grade. So, the student gained an advantage over the other students by being able to revise the re-submitted assignment before I finished grading it.

Proposed solution:

Therefore, there needs to be a way to hide an individual student's grade when they are allowed to re-submit. I should not have to re-hide ALL all the grades on that assignment for the whole class. That's ludicrous. The other students need to see their grades and my comments to assist them with their next assignment. That's the "why."

Thank you for sharing this idea with the Instructure Community!

While we appreciate your proposal, we also want to be transparent about the likelihood of something like this making it to production. The Product Team reviewed some of our feature proposals recently and, unfortunately, this request was identified as one that they would not be able to include in their current or future plans.

We can see how it would add functionality to be able to hide individual student grades for this type of situation to avoid having the student inadvertently see written comments, however there are other instructors who would like for students to see comments in order to help them on their next attempts. The workflow we currently suggest is to use the Manual Posting Policy and to post grades after all assignment grades have been entered.

Thank you for collaborating, and we hope that you submit another idea in the future!

Problem statement:

From time-to-time, instructors need a simple way to hide grades from individual students. This is often for reasons of academic integrity but may be due to other individual concerns which only become apparent after grades have already been posted. Currently functionality requires that instructors perform one of the following: - Refrain from posting grades. This delays when other students are able to receive their grades and feedback and would understandably result in stress and emails from students keen to receive their results. - Post only for students who have been graded. Not helpful if the grades need to be withdrawn and reviewed at a later date. - If already posted, hide all grades, delete grade for relevant individuals and repost graded. Again confusing for the above reasons if any students have not received their grades. Further, feedback left on a student submission (i.e. annotations and inline comments in the DocViewer) remains visible to the student. - Adjust section enrolments and release to specific sections. Not helpful if the issue only becomes apparent later on. In a large institution like ours, we don't give our instructors the ability to add sections as this may risk disrupting the integration with our SIS. Requires manual work by admins for what seems to be a relatively simple task. - Adjust section enrolments and hide from specific sections. Again, not helpful at our institution. Requires manual work by admins for what seems to be a relatively simple task.

Proposed solution:

The current gradebook status functionality could be expanded to include an additional "Under Review" or "Pending" status. If this status is selected for a student submission at any point, grades and feedback (including annotations left on the submission/s) will be hidden from the student. The grade would appear and behave as if not posted for that student. I.e. would no longer be included in the posted totals. This would give greatest control to an instructor who wishes to 'withdraw' grades and feedback from a student even after grades have already been posted. Removal of the status would result in grades once again being visible to the student so long as grades have also been posted to the student.
