[Assigments] Add the Timer feature to an Assignment

Problem statement:

As part of a comprehensive exam for a doctoral level program, the exam consists of three essay questions. The participants are required to complete the essay question via a Word document and upload that document to Canvas. However, the students will have a set amount of time (120 minutes) to complete each essay. The student's have a 1 week period to complete their essays and each essay will be run through a plagiarism checker (Turn It In). The Canvas Quiz tool does not connect to external tools/LTIs. The assignment tool does not have the timer feature.

Proposed solution:

Two possible solutions: 1) add the timer feature to the assignment tool in Canvas. When the student clicks "start assignment" the timer will start. Canvas will create an assign box for that student on that assignment and set the Available Until date/time to be whatever the start date/time is plus the maximum time allowed for the assignment. 2) allow the file upload question type on the Quiz tool to access external plagiarism tools (like Turn It In).

Assignments without timer

Proposed solution:

It would be great if we could use a timer for assignments, just like in tests.

Problem statement:

Currently, an assignment can be completed during the entire time period between release and due date. Take-home exam scenarios, including group-based scenarios, are not possible. As an alternative, you can only use the New Quizzes quiz.

Proposed solution:

Please add a timer to an assignment so that students can decide when they want to work on an assignment for 60 minutes within a larger time window, for example. Teachers then have the option of having submissions checked for plagiarism and downloading them together or re-uploading them with comments.
