what kind of databases do canvas support?

I am exploring the resources via canvas's developer. I cannot find the information about how to send the message between professor and student. I want to see the property of schema such as to store, retrieve and to create the message. I determine to build the student's view about message to the professor. I wonder if you'd able to send me the resources. By the way, please correct me if canvas provides the support database: postgre.  thank you for taking your time to read.
