What the use of Redirect URI which is mandatory in Developers Keys ?

When i am creating developer keys, the Redirect URI field is mandatory but i am putting anything in it and it is getting saved. Also when i sending request for token it is also working fine. So what exactly the use of this Redirection URI ? Is it for any specific use ?

I'm not a very seasoned developer with respect to making our own LTI tools, but from working with UDOIT and configuring their tool for our purposes, we had to generate our own developer key. My understanding is that it's for Canvas to know where to send requests for the Oauth2 process. So if a tool has Oauth2 authentication, this is for step 2 of the Oauth2 process in the Canvas Oauth2 workflow.

I was also thinking the same i.e. this redirect uri should be the same as OAuth login redirect_uri but this redirect URI doesn't mean in my case. As the Redirect URI in developer key section is different from the OAuth redirect_uri and there is no error at all.
