Is there a way to import a single item from a course in the commons?? For example, I want to import one quiz from a course that has 97 billion other items in it. There must be a way!

Unfortunately, Commons does not let you pull out a specific item from an entire course that has been shared to Canvas Commons. In your example, you would not be able to import a quiz from the entire course that was shared to Commons. The owner of that course would have to share the quiz separately to Commons, and then you could import it into your own course.
Sorry I don't have better news for you, but I hope this helps to answer your question.

@wilsonj81 A solution that we've used is to pull the course into a "Sandbox" course and "copy to" the real course. We often do this for any Commons course, as normal process, so that we can preview in our environment especially if there is units of measurement (e.g. Imperial vs Metric) and want to check fro consistency.
This has been useful when we've wanted particular pages and/or quizzes but not the whole assignment/discussions etc.
This does require having a SandBox.
