Text column in gradebook

Is it possible to add a "text" column in the gradebook so that I can enter words such as "done" "late", or enter mid-term grade estimates "A, B, C.." without the grade being effected?

 @hansonter  , does the comment part -- in either the gradebook or Speedgrader -- not work for you?  I do agree with you, though.  In our older system, I could put grdg (for grading) in the gradebook as a place holder.

it does not work for me either. I like to put the actual letter grade the student is receiving in the gradebook.  Sure they SHOULD be able to figure that out, but they cannot. I also use it to let them know which group they are in.  A text field that students can see is what we need, like the other LMS's have.

I often use the Notes column in the Gradebook to add information about students that are for me and are not attached to a submission. I use the Notes Column for adding students' graduation year and book/equipment numbers.

The downside (in this situation!) to adding comments directly on assignments through the gradebook/speedgrader is that students will see them when it may not necessarily be needed.

In the new gradebook, there are notes you can use to flag individual submissions.

Click on a cell and then click the small arrow.

This brings up a status sidebar that you can use to leave a per-submission tag on.

The comment box also pops up for specific comments. The only text entry you can do in the cell is "EX" to flag it as excused. Late and Missing need to be selected via the popup.

Note that assignments with no submission are flagged as Missing automatically by Canvas based on the assignment due date. Submissions after the due date are flagged Late automatically as well.

Is there a way to code LATE just going doing the column without opening that sidebar?

I run into a need of changing missings to late for assignments that are turned in on paper or external tools that don't auto pull grades.  Opening that side bar is tedious when doing it for many in a class....

So the answer to this question is NO if it is something you want students to see. If you want it for you, then then answer is yes, with the new gradebook.

The addition of a simple "text" option in the gradebook is a MINIMAL degree of functionality.

Canvas is garbage.  I will be recommending my institution drop it immediately.
