Sections vs groups.

On Canvas, what is the difference between groups and sections? I have one course with 7 sections, PK-5. I want to create an assignment for one section or grade. It looks like I have to first create an assignment group, even though my students are already in sections. Also, to create a group, I have to add students one by one by name. There seems to be no way to look them up by section.

You most definitely should be able to assign to a section - in fact you cannot assign to groups, only make group assignments. Check out this guide: How do I assign an assignment to a course section?
