Role differentiation for faculty between Sandbox and Production

Is it possible to have different roles for faculty between the sandbox and prod environments?

I could be wrong, but I would not think so since the Sandbox (Test environment) pulls from the production environment.  It is possible to have them different for a few weeks but the sync should switch them back.
