Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
Our district's SIS import is set up to cross-list courses with multiple sections (three sections of Algebra I for example), which makes sense in a majority of scenarios. But, in certain cases, it doesn't fit the bill. A teacher would like to de-cross-list one section from a course that has three courses. (That section covers the same standards but does so with an entirely different curriculum and focus.)
I looked at https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-10887-4214719647 guide but it says to use a "De-Cross-List This Section" button. I do not see that button when I view this course. In fact, I still see the "Cross List This Section" button!
The guide, it sounds like, is talking about de-crossing a section that had been previously manually cross-listed. I am wondering if there are different steps for a scenario where the cross-listing was done automatically via SIS import.
And I am a full Account Admin.
Thanks!
Hi @jwelchans ...
Have you checked the other courses that are cross-listed with the course in question? One of those might have the "De-Cross-List this Section" button you're looking for.
Hi @jwelchans
I would advise contacting your account's Canvas Admin. The functionality to cross-list and uncross-list can be shut off for faculty. In our account, my office partner and I control all cross-listing functionality through our Admin pages.
I hope this helps.
I am an admin on our district canvas course and a teacher
needs me to manually de cross a course- how do I do this?
Have you looked all the different sections involved?
I do see the de-cross list option in courses cross-listed through an SIS import, but only in one of the sections (which I believe is the "parent" course), which is the same as with manually cross-listed courses.
At our school, when a course is cross-listed by the SIS Import it is not
done using the Crosslist function (specifying sections in xlist.csv). It is
done by the registration system assigning the different sections to a
single course.
Check with your administrator. If the SIS Import is not using the xlist.csv
or the API equivalents, then the courses are not using the crosslisting
function, and it makes sense that there will be no "de-crosslist" button
available.
Since we haven't used the xlist.csv in our SIS Import process, I can't
confirm that you should see that button if they are using the function, but
I would guess that it would be there.

Is the section you're looking at the section that's tied to the overall course shell? When you de-cross-list a section, it goes back to the course shell it originated from. So you cannot de-cross-list a section that's "native" (so to speak) to the course, because it has nowhere to go.
We use SIS cross-listing, and it creates an extra shell where the cross-listed sections live - the sections move out of the original shells and end up in this new cross-listing shell. It is possible for us to de-cross-list all sections from that shell. But it sounds like maybe your SIS cross-lists in a different way.
Thanks all for the responses!
@Chris_Hofer , @kbickell , - I did go in and check all the sections of all this user (and a couple other users). They are all showing the same setup. Only a "Crosslist" button, no "De-crosslist" button.
@kmeeusen , @lekern - Thanks for the insights. I am the Canvas account admin for our district so I don't think it is a permissions issue.
@lekern , @tdelillo - Your info is helpful, thanks. I think we have some things in how we set up the SIS import that is determining how this works/looks. I wasn't a part of that initial discussion about the import but I have a call with our Canvas CSM tomorrow and will pick their brain about how this is working and the best steps to take in these situations. I will report back with what I find out.
I appreciate all your responses. The Community is my most valuable work resource. Thanks y'all.
Jake, I think Tracey's advice might be your answer. If the course was created with multiple sections, you don't actually want to "de-cross-list." It isn't actually a cross-list course (two courses merged). It is a multi-section course. You want to just split a section out. You would actually use the cross-list functionality to do this.
Jake our district also does cross-listing for our secondary courses, we do this through the SIS import so because they are being build as cross-listed courses the option to de-cross them is not available for anyone. Teacher can still further cross-list courses if they wish and only we (admins) can de-cross in case of an issue but cross-listing through the import is either all or nothing from what I experienced.
At the risk of adding confusing information, we run our cross-listing through API calls. If you remove all sections from a multiple section site, it resets the original section course site (changes the LMS ID). We only allow "de-cross-list" after backups and if there is no student work. We also delete the original multiple section site before the new API call; seems to keep the API calls happier 😉
The bit about LMS ID is important if you maintain enrollment and grades by API; if the LMS ID resets and you don't note it, the future enrollment and grade updates fail.
@rake_9 - Yes, you are correct. That is the best description of what is happening and how I should create a solution for this unique situation.
After a discussion with our CSM ( @cdoty ), she helped me wrap my head around this, and, like you guys, stated that I shouldn't see this multiple section course as cross-listed and that I could create a new course and use cross-listing to pull out one of the sections into it.
THANKS EVERYONE!
We are giving the Canvas Admins area a little bit of love and just want to check in with you. This will also bring this question new attention.

Yep - I am good now.
The Community helped shed some light on it for me.
Thanks for checking back!
If you're an admin, you should be be able to de-cross-list by following these instructions:
