Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
I'm currently grading essays via Quizzes.Next and have set it to hide all grades. I can see the eye with the slash on both SpeedGrader and my Gradebook (it's the new one). However, immediately after giving the essay a score, it changes it from "Hidden" to posted. Is this a glitch or a problem others are seeing? I wanted them to be hidden so everyone got their scores at once, as essays take a while to grade. But, students are seeing their scores unless I immediately click the "Hide Grades" after I grade each essay. It's getting a little frustrating.

@amanda_greco instead of using Hide Grades, try using a manual grade posting policy. When I tested this just now, the new quiz submission score (after essay grade entry) stayed hidden. In the new gradebook, Hide Grades is literally that - for grades which had been visible to students, Hiding withdraws them from student visibility. (Hide is not Mute - something we're finding needs clarification with teachers used to old Mute.)
Regarding:
Is this a glitch or a problem others are seeing?
It's probably worth reporting to your support team. I think it may be that scoring the essay question updates the grade; this "fresh" grade is then immediately released under what may have been a default automatic posting policy.

I've had this exact same problem with a quiz but I did choose the 'manually post grades' function as you have suggested Rob. I had to manually select 'hide grades' as students received their grades 3 weeks early. Super frustrating to say the least! Is there anything that can be done on this? For all Assignments the 'manually post grades' function has worked and I have only had issue with this quiz.
@eleanor_kippax , do you remember whether Post Grades was used at all after setting the manual grading posting policy? If it was used with the "Everyone" option to release a few early completely-scored quiz grades, that might explain what happened. (Posting to "Everyone" treats the assignment essentially as automatic going forward...).
If you're sure that didn't happen, then this is worth reporting as a bug.
Hi @RobDitto , thanks for your reply. My understanding was the 'manually post grades' was self explanatory, that when a grade was entered in a box the grade would be hidden, in fact that is what it says when choosing this option. Grades were not deliberately posted, and 'post grades' was not used for everyone or otherwise. How would I go about reporting this as a bug? Thanks
