Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
We have blueprint courses created and synced with student courses. In the blueprint courses, our teachers have created Google Assignments with LTI 1.3 integration so that it forces a copy of a document for each student. When they are synced with the student courses, the Google doc does not appear for the students.
I was testing the tool and have this same issue. It is no-go for us. We use BluePrint courses going out to 18 different sub-accounts with associated courses. Google assignment is pushed down, but no files are attached under Associated courses. i contacted Canvas, they send me to Google. Google did not provide any support and did not know what i was even talking about. I hope this issue is resolved by Google before Canvas discontinue Google Cloud assignment with Google LTI. I think date was set for September 2021.
Have you found any solutions to this?
As of this moment, the only way is for the Teachers to attach assignment files under each course (this is not a good solution for our model). Canvas is waiting on Google to address this issue since Google built the tool. If you try to talk to Google they do not know anything about this since Blueprinting is the Canvas feature. I feel like I am stuck in a ping-pong game.
Have you tried using the import feature? I am curious if that would work. Seems like a lot of extra work but maybe something?
That is a great idea, I will have to try and test that.
Can you please share the result of your testing? This is critical for our process as well. Thank you all so much! This is an incredibly valuable conversation – as I'm concerned about these new 'updates'.
I finish testing this using the export and import feature and it is no-go. Assignments do not include attached files. I also tried to use the Canvas copy feature from the module and the attached files do not copy. Some of the Teachers reported that even if Google LTI Assignments successfully copied via BluePrint, they could not Edit and attache file assignment. They had to remove the entire assignment and add it again and then add their own files. Clearly Google LTI is created for Single Teacher loading assignment to their own course. This tool is not performing as Google Cloud assignments did. Back to square one.
@leo_satara We're running into the same issues as we have attempted to set our courses up predominantly on the blueprint design model. We have a call 9/28 with Google Cloud support on this topic, will relay any information we can provide.
Has there been any updates on using Google Assignments LTI1.3 in blueprints, or any other issue that we are having with it? I hate that our teachers are becoming frustrated with this tool and getting ready to give up on it. I would love to see the issues worked out so that we can use it with more efficiency.
Another issue we are experiencing with Google Assignments is that you cannot edit the attachment after the assignment has been created. For example, one of our teachers created the assignment, but forgot to attach the Google Doc that students were to get. When she went back into the editing mode for the assignment, she could not attach the Google Doc in the external tool option. She had to recreate the entire assignment. We love this new feature, and we hope Canvas and Google can work on making it more user-friendly.
We met with Google Cloud Support on Monday regarding this and came out with a lot of good information. Canvas built the original Google Drive Could Assignment app, but Google built the new Google Assignments (LTI 1.3), but they tried to do it to cover multiple LMS's. They said they've been getting hammered by the Canvas community about the blueprint issue and are working on it, but wouldn't give us an ETA. The functionality of the new external tool has fixed all of the problems we were having with the old tool, minus the obvious lack of success in the blueprint setting. Cross your fingers!
Just received a followup from Google Cloud Support, and it looks like we need to flood Google requesting a Feature Idea:
I have already verified with our Support Development team and right now they have not prioritized anything regarding the blueprint courses with Canvas, so I encourage you to submit this as a Feature Idea so that it can be reviewed by other admins and also by our support developer team and then added to Google in the coming updates, you can follow this link https://support.google.com/a/answer/6284762 and then follow the steps to sign in to the Cloud Connect Community. Please note that we will need you to wait up to 24 hours for you to be able to access the Cloud Connect Community.
@dphillips1010 Has this idea already been created? I'd like to give my support to it.

Thanks for the support! Hopefully we can get enough likes to move it up their list!
I wanted to give everyone an update on this process. We were notified by a Google Cloud superuser (12,915 points) that we were proposing this in the wrong place, so we added in on their Feature Request site. Please go and comment and boost this up!
Any updates on this?
@hlovett I watched the Google Assignments webinar yesterday (here is the link) and they mentioned that this would be up and running by the fall. The person from Google was very explicit that this would be working for Blueprints by then.
