Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
Recently we started noticing the "error retrieving external tools" message on some assignments created at our site. I have verified the problem, and reading through similar questions, found that calling an external tool in the assignment is often a cause.
However in our case, I have observed that in several cases no LTI is being explicitly accessed as an external tool.
Is it possible that there is an LTI tool that is being called without it? Is anyone else seeing the same message?
Thanks!

Hi Jason and Josh,
Some of my colleagues experienced the same and we could bring it down to the browser being not supported.
In our case they had a not supported enterprise version of Firefox running. Updating the browser to the newest consumer version solved the problem.
See https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-10461-supported-web-browsers for more information about supported web browsers.
Hope this helps!
kind regards,
Gerdien
I am randomly getting the same thing in several of our courses. I have faculty contacting me about it, but they are not using LTI tools in their course.

Thank you, Gerdien. That makes sense. We will test that here and see if browser versions make a difference.
