Dear Canvas Community,
Is there a way to disable students emailing one another, but still able to email the instructor, in a Canvas Course Shell?
Please advise,
John Spencer

Hi @john_spencer,
There are two role-based permission settings for Conversations: Conversations - send messages to entire class and Conversations - send to individual course members. According to the Canvas Account Role Permissions PDF, if both are disabled, "students can still send individual messages to course teachers and course TAs. Additionally, when disabled, students cannot send individual messages to
students who belong to the same account-level groups".
We also have a few idea conversations around changing how the Inbox and its settings are managed in Canvas. If you'd like to support any of the following ideas, you can rate them and/or comment on them.
- Control Conversations at a Course Level
- Make the Inbox an optional feature (faculty already have emails!)
- Make inbox rights a user level setting
