Can Quiz Answers Be Used to Create Student Groups?

Hello. I'm trying to combine a quiz, Mastery Paths and student groups--and not having any luck. 

I've developed a competency-based course. The course includes teamwork elements. We are going to ask students to identify how quickly they intend to complete the course. After that, we'll place them into three groups (fast, medium, slow) according to what they've selected.

Is there a way to use a quiz that asks them to identify their pace and have their responses automatically place them into the corresponding Group in Canvas?

There's probably a completely different way to think about this and solve this issue--without a manual workaround I hope. My mind is so deep in course development, I just can't come up with it.
