Hi @reed-sanderlin Welcome to the Canvas Community!
In a synchronous modality you and your students are in the same place at the same time - for example, a Zoom webinar. In asynchoronous you are not, For example, you post an announcement (or any other material) and your students can access it whenever it is available.
