Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
My students' exams consists of multiple choice questions followed by seven free response questions, for which they do a file upload (one file containing all seven questions). My current strategy is very slow, so I would like to find out if anyone has figured out a faster way.
My current strategy is: go to speed grader and download all files one by one into a designated folder on my computer. Then I grade the exams question-by-question, i.e. grade #1 in all 60 files, then grade #2 in all 60 files, etc. Then, for each student, I re-upload their exam in the assignment comments.
Needless to say, this is extremely slow. I can think of two ways to improve it, but I haven't been able to implement them. For one, I could download all assignments in one go. However, for some reason I do not have the "Download Submission" button.
Secondly, it would be great if I could see and edit all the PDF's directly in speed grader. I know there is something called DocView, but I don't know how to enable it. In speedgrader I just get a link to download student submission.
Thank you very much.
Evidently there is no efficient way: file upload quiz questions can't be graded in place using the DocView interface (unlike file uploads in an Assignment), and in New Quizzes there is no way to download all of the submissions at once. It's pretty awful. Go vote here to encourage a fix for the issue! https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Idea-Conversations/SpeedGreader-should-open-pdfs-in-DocViewer-for...
The best way I've found to administer multiple choice and free response on Canvas is to actually separate the two. I give the MC questions as a Canvas quiz, but then I have the free response questions in an "assignment" (instead of a "quiz"). My students print out the free response section, scan their papers as PDF, and then upload the PDF to this assignment. The resulting set of PDF's can now be previewed using SpeedGrader (without you having to manually download each individual PDF file). Alternatively, the resulting set of PDFs can be downloaded together as one big zip file which you can annotate (and you can also rezip these files and upload them in one go as a "bulk upload"):
