[ARCHIVED] Turnitin and Quizzes

Has anyone found a useful way to use Turnitin within the context of a quiz containing an essay question?  This came up during an impromptu Canvas consult the other day and I am searching for someway to streamline this process considerably.  I realize that Turnitin cannot access any material turned in within a quiz, and that the most obvious way to check for plagiarism in this instance is to log in to Turnitin's site and copy/paste manually. I can see this working for a smaller class (20-30 students), but for larger classes with 100+ students and no TA, no instructor is going to want to check for plagiarism this way.

Any thoughts and suggestions on some creative workarounds?

I'm going to bring  @dhulsey ​ into this conversation.  He's the resident guru when it comes to Turnitin, so I'm sure he'll be able to give you some help on this subject.

 @magreen ​, for using Turnitin on a quiz, the easiest way would be to use a file upload question. This allows students to upload a file in response to the question, and the instructor can bulk download the files from the quiz as documented in How do I create a File Upload quiz question?​.  Once the students' files are downloaded in a zip file, the instructor could upload the zip file to the Turnitin - Checking Quick Submit​​ feature on Turnitin's website.

Depending on your quiz security needs, something like Respondus LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor might provide an alternate path.

This should not be flagged as a "Solution".... just mentioned as something that some folks might have overlooked as an option. This is NOT a solution -- for me (see my comment below) or effectively for any faculty member in my field.

A time-consuming work-around is not a solution. Should be very straightforward to allow a simpler method.

I was astonished (and that's not strong enough) to learn that TurnItIn is not an option in quizzes. 

With a large lecture course that uses short-answer "quizzes" every week uploading/downloading files is effectively an impossibility. for time and for clogging up graders' own computers (not to mention malware concerns). 

Locked-down browsers are a joke in almost all circumstances (exception would be if coupled with other tracking software -- leading to privacy issues with the kind of tracking that would truly be needed), as most students have at least two web-enabled devices.  And in my class, the assignments all have multiple readings that are off-Canvas and on various external media sites — so students have to be able to use their browsers anyways. 

I have a hard time imagining the conversation in-house that came up with the idea not to put TurnItIn as an option into quizzes.  "Oh, let's NOT give professors the ability to check plagiarism and cheating in their quizzes!"  Seriously?

I agree that having Turnitin or other anti-plagiarism software available for essay questions on quizzes would be very helpful.

Also, I just found out (I maybe slow) that Turnitin doesn't support Group Assignment submissions. If you try to apply Turnitin as the submission method for a group assignment there is an error message saying it's not supported.  Customer service just said I can have each group member submit there own copy which is not a solution.  This would be very easy, quick coding but apparently not a priority. Doesn't anybody do group assignments anymore?
