Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
Hi There,
Wondering if anyone has seen any good solutions (Canvas tools, canvas apps, 3rd party tools) to help manage industry placement hours. In these COVID impacted times, we are relying on SMS/calls/emails to track where people are up to and it is too slow as the situation changes so quickly. Wondering if anyone has a solution for students to record their hours in relative real-time (at the end of each day of placement) and have a supervisor sign off digitally (versus the current paper approach) at regular intervals to confirm student attendance. This would allow us to know day to day whether students were being impacted on placement versus trawling through emails/SMS and managing on spreadsheets and individual student placement documents. Thanks. Ryan
Hi Ryan,
I've been looking at how to do this successfully for a long time, including meeting compliance requirements such as a physical signature. I've just recently worked it out using JotForm (paid subscription) where there is a form that students fill out, it can be digitally signed on a tablet, and then submitted. There is an integration with OneDrive and Google Drive, so the submissions can go there as PDFs, they just then need to be moved to the students file. Alternatively, it can email the PDF to the student and they upload it into an assignment in Canvas that has unlimited attempts (they just upload their latest copy and they accumulate).
Thanks Kerri. Sometimes the answer is on your doorstep. We use Jotform for all our student administration forms but I didnt think of it for this use case. I will give it a try. Thankyou!
Hi Kerry,
I am looking at JotForm. Can you suggest a specific template - as there are so many to choose from. thanks, Jane
Hi @JanePeters,
Apologies for the delay in replying - I didn't get a notification there was a message.
I haven't used a template in JotForm, just created one from scratch with the exact fields we wanted.
Here is a basic one - not compliant at all! It was a play around, but essentially we set it up in a way that would capture the evidence we wanted and include signatures.
Hopefully this example helps.

If you want to record workplace activities against a unit of competency then take a look at this product https://www.readytech.com.au/readyskills/
At our school, we use this to manage student's training plan, logging hours, manage booking, etc.
In a similar vein to Ryan's question, I'm looking for something to record the observation of physical work placement tasks. Currently we're using paperbased Observation checklists, but with the move to Canvas we're hoping to ditch the paper. Would you suggest JotForm for this as well? I've noticed they have numerous observation templates so it's obviously able to be used for that purpose. I couldn't find anything within Canvas itself that would suit this type of assessment. Thank you, Margaret
Apologies for missing your message - notifications didn't alert me for some reason.
With observations we actually set these up using rubrics. Each criterion on your rubric is an observable behaviour. Some like to set each one up as an outcome, but I've moved away from doing this due to the time involved in setup, and really the point of using the outcomes is so you can report on them - we don't really tend to want to report on individual observable behaviours, but an overall task instead. So a simple rubric is best for this.
