Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
I am an instructor trying to create an assignment. I cannot get the Submission Type drop down menu to reappear so that I can change the files allowed type. Where did it go? How do I get it back to edit it? Thank you!

Hi @duhatsch Welcome to the Canvas Community. I see your question has been here for over a week, and I admit that when I first saw it, I thought "Wow...I've never seen that! I have no idea what could cause that; may be she should just contact Canvas support." and just left it to people with bigger brains than mine to solve. By now, I imagine you probably have solved this yourself or indeed contacted support.
In the meantime, I have seen that...under one, relatively unique circumstance. Did you at some point change the Display Grade as drop-down menu to "Not Graded"? After saving it, that will indeed make the Submission type menu disappear entirely. The way to get the Submission type drop-down back is by clicking EDIT and change the Display Grade as to something like "Points" and you will get that drop-down menu back again. Also, if this happened to be an assignment for which you want submissions (just as for a first draft or something like that) and want to see submissions but not have it graded, necessarily, it is best to still give it a point value--even worth 0 points--but enable the checkbox for "Do not count this assignment towards the final grade." That way, at least, you can get submissions and comment on it.
If the above does not work, well, it's back to thinking that you should contact Canvas support (Help>>Report a Problem). I would be curious to hear the answer, though, because (again) the above is the only circumstance I could think of that could cause this, off-hand.
Hope this helps a bit, Kelley, and sorry again for the delay in getting an answer.

It was indeed the solution, Ken! Thank you! I did figure it out on my own -but only after I had contacted support. So then I felt silly.
Thank you again!

Oh, believe me, we have all made our share of such support requests ourselves! Glad they could help.
This is really silly! Why in the world would an assignment not being graded mean that online submissions are impossible?? Canvas should fix this!
I have this same problem but only on the mobile app. I forgot to give an assignment a submission type and tried to modify that on my phone. No joy.
Found out that it did not matter if I had set the type or not. There simply is no option given to change submission type with a phone. At least none that I could find.
