Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
Grades/Assignments: I have unweighted my assignment groups, and have configured the grade total to show as points rather than percent. I would like to have each Assignment Group view the same way: points rather than percentage. I would also like to indicate under the header for each group (in the Gradebook), how many total points are available in that group (i.e. "out of 100"). Is there a way to do this? I've tried the Assignment Group editing and can't seem to find a toggle or setting for that.
Solved! Go to Solution.
Assignment Groups are designed to break like assignments up into either a similar heading (not weighted) or into weight percentage groups. The only way to show the assignment groups as points would be to manually enter the number of points available as part of the title of the assignment group.

I know this might not be the best solution out there, but it is possible to see the total points of a given Assignment Group with a few extra clicks of the mouse. However, in my testing, it's not something you'll find on the instructor/teacher side. Rather, you'll want to go to Student View.
How do I view a course as a test student using Student View?
Then, while in Student View, click on the Grades course navigation button.
How do I view my grades in a current course?
On the Grades screen, on the right hand side, make sure that the check box for "Calculate based only on graded assignments" is NOT checked. Then, scroll to the very bottom of the Grades screen. You will see any Assignment Groups you had created for your course listed in bold text ... each with their own row. In the far right-hand column, you will see something like x / y where x = total points student received for all Assignments in that Assignment Group, and y = total possible points for all Assignments in the Assignment Group. Here is an example in my own sandbox course where I have three Assignment Groups:
I agree...it's not the most convenient way to view the total number of points for all Assignments in an Assignment Group, but it does provide you with the information you are all looking for.

The outline is only a solution to the total points shown for the Assignment group. It still doesnt solve the problem of showing the Assignment group totals as points. This would be very useful indeed and I dont see how this can be done currently. Shouldnt be that tricky to implement... (actually in the same way the total of points could be added equally easy).

I agree, it would be very helpful to be see what the assignments in a group total to. For many of us, this is part of how we design the course and or check that we have created and correctly assigned points to all the assignments and not missed anything. In Blackboard, this feature is implemented with assignment categories, and the user can create a total column for any category to see what the total possible points are. Those columns can also be used to help students to see their total score in a category, which students also find very useful.
I think this item should not be considered "solved" but should rather be a feature request if it is not currently possible to see assignment group totals.
I agree, this should not be considered solved.
I'm trying to track attendance not to provide points in my course, but such that the integer number of missed sessions is important: as students miss more sessions they don't get to drop as many lowest quiz scores. Every aspect of Canvas grades seems to be set up to make this very difficult for me.
Since it's impossible, this needs to be a feature request. How can I see whether this is already a request, and make one if it's not?
Hi @Manwe ...
It looks like you are currently a New Member here in the Community. Recently, the Canvas Community managers made some changes that affect who can make Feature Idea requests. This is detailed in: Welcome New Members. So, you'll need to participate more in the Community before you can submit Feature Ideas on your own. If you go here: Idea Conversations - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com), you can click on "Suggest an idea", and then you can start searching for existing Feature Ideas that might be close to what you are looking for. Or, you can use the search field at the top of any page here in the Community.

I can change the course total to display as points, but not the assignment groups. For courses that use total points earned as the metric, the fact that the assignment groups can only seem to show as percentages is problematic b/c it provides inaccurate feedback to students. In the course "settings", I can click a box to hide grade totals, but this hides both the assignment group totals AND the course total. Again, problematic because now students have to add up all of their points manually.
How is this a solution to the question?
Why doesn't Canvas have an option to show the # of points in each assignment category? The fact that we can display the # of total points on all assignments indicates that this should be pretty easy for Canvas to implement.
This issue has not been solved.
