I am in need of some programming help.  I am just learning to use Ruby and thought that after watching the course provided on the Learn.Canvas.Net site, I was ready to go.  I took one of the programs and started to modify it in order to make it fit my needs.  However, when the program runs, it errors out.  I am trying to perform the following API query https://yoursitehere.com/api/v1/courses/[somenumber]/quizzes/[somenumber]/submissions?include[]=user and put the results into a CSV file.  I need to pick up the id, quiz_id, user_id and workflow_state variables.  Can someone please look at my attached files and see where I may be in error?  Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi  @talway ,

That TypeError [] on an array means the indexed item or elements don't exist.

require 'pp' is a very useful debugging tool, it's pretty print.

pp data, reveals that the first object is 'quiz_submissions'

So line #42 becomes:

data['quiz_submissions'].each do |courses|

personally, I'd rename |courses| to |submission|

Additionally, unless it's not in your code yet, I don't think you need to ?include[]=users... the data you're putting in the CSV is contained without that extra include, and users comes as a separate object, so you'd have to map on user_id if you're looking to append their name to the row.

You can also reduce the number of requests by passing per_page=100, which is nicer than the default 10, if your counts are going to be higher. Handling Pagination

Hi Robert:

Thank you for your recommendations.  I have a feeling that when this is up and running and I am going to have one of those ah-hah moments, but not at this time.  When I edited line #42 I now get the error in the image below.  I've tried changing to { } and [ ] and combinations of each, but no luck.  Did I miss something?

Here is line #42 (PS I changed the "courses" to "submission" as recommended
