There are a few ways you can do this, depending on how your course is set up. If you use Modules, you can set up a file or document with the Quiz Code and add the prep assignment as a requirement within a module, so the student must submit or score a certain amount on the assignment before viewing the file or document with the quiz code. You can learn about module requirements here: How do I add requirements to a module? If you choose that route, I recommend choosing the "Complete all requirements" option and require students to move through in sequential order.
You can also create the prep assignment as a practice quiz or ungraded survey and then add the code as a comment under the correct quiz answer (there are a number of ways you can set this up, but you can learn more about the basics here: How do I create an Essay quiz question? This lesson is for an essay question type, but the answer comments apply for any question type). There are likely other ways to set this up, but these methods are the most straightforward.
