Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
I had a faculty member say that suddenly the "Reset Course Content" button is gone in their settings menu. They contacted Canvas support and were told that Canvas admins at their school removed the permission and they are the only ones who can reinstate that permission. None of the Canvas admins did, however, change the setting to hide this button on faculty. We are not sure why it suddenly disappeared from faculty view or how to get it back. Note, it still in an admin's view of the settings menu.
Any help on how to reinstate the permission for faculty to have this button? I've gone through every single permission I can think of and cannot find it.

YES! In Canvas' release yesterday, July 7, 2021, this feature was unbundled and it now a permission on it's own. Thank you!
The permission is under "Manage Courses" -> Course - Publish.
However, for the changes to take effect, you'll need to remove the admin or teacher from their accounts or courses then add them back after any changes you made.
Hi @amanda_lemaster ,
While @jerry_nguyen is close, I think a couple details he posted are incorrect... As of the last Canvas release, the Manage Courses permission was made more granular. The reset button availability is currently tied to the "courses - delete" granular permission (because resetting a course essentially is a delete and recreate action combined). Your admins could choose ot enable the courses - delete permission if they choose. No re-adding of teachers will be needed for the change to take effect, but permission changes do have some caching so it may take an hour or two for everyone to see the change.
That being said, in next week's deploy, there will be a new courses - reset permission, since there are a lot of cases where it's desirable to let users reset the course, but not just completely delete it. If your admins are concerned about delete being available, they will probably want to wait until the new reset permission comes out next week and then enable that for the teacher role.

Thanks Chris. The thing is, I am one of the admins and we hadn't talked about this nor taken any action that would have made this suddenly not an option for our faculty.
So you're saying in the new release there will be a more clearly defined option for admins to reset course content permission? Because I looked in my admin privileges for something similar for nearly an hour and couldn't figure it out.
Hi @amanda_lemaster ,
Yes, next week's deploy should add a very clear permission for the reset button. @jerry_nguyen provided a screenshot of the new/current permission that was released last month and probably triggered the issue. Since you're an admin, you should be able to see the permissions area, correct? Which ones under the Manage Courses permission are checked off? I believe if you check the Courses - Delete permission now, the reset and delete buttons will become visible within a few hours. You can also wait until next week if you only want just the reset button available without the delete option.
