We need some sort of functionality that can allow for a quiz and a follow up discussion about the quiz within the group work functionality in Canvas i.e. throughout their time at the school, the coach and the student can go back to the quiz to reflect on the answers that the participant gave and review progress Any ideas?

fodegbami​ , I'm not sure if I understand what you're looking for. Do you mean the ability to have a written/recorded record about things discussed in regards to quiz results - only between an individual student and a coach? Could they have the conversation as part of the comments part of the quiz? That's what I do when I'm talking/working with a student about their quiz.

Thank you Kona, that's quite a useful note and i had never tried to use the comments in a quiz to have the discussion. My understanding was that the teacher can provide a comment on individual quiz answers rather than the entire quiz however the student wouldn't be able to reply back to it?

I'll provide you a few details so you can understand the entire requirement:

When the student joins the school, he/she is asked to complete a set of questions (all text) around what they wish to achieve from the programme/course. Throughout the student's time at the school, a coach has a series of interactions with the student in relation to the answers he/she has provided to the questions and how the student is progressing. So the way you could look at this is to possibly have a quizz/questionnaire that once completed turns into an ongoing discussion where the coach and the student shares their ideas/interact with each other and also be able to see the initial questions and answers.

Now what i have described above it is when you have a one to one interaction which happens on some courses. However on other courses, we have groups of 5/10 students that report to one coach and share their answers between them and have the discussion. So in this case each student will have to complete the questionnaire however the discussion is open to everyone in the group i.e. whatever the coach or the student writes, it is available to view between all of the students in that group.

It's a bit long but i hope this makes more sense.

Is there a requirement for the initial quiz to be automatically graded?  Are there correct and incorrect responses that the student may give or is it more open ended?  If is is the latter, could you start in a discussion forum to begin with?  Is there a requirement that the student's responses be held private from other students?  If so, could you use an ungraded assignment where the student could drop off their initial responses and then the student and coach could review them periodically throughout the term? 

I worked with a medical school once that has cohorts of students work through a year or multi-year long project.  They used modules for each milestone in the project with all the associated files and discussions for each stage of the project.  To complete a milestone the students would submit a description of their progress to an assignment.  If the project coordinator approved of their progress and plan for moving forward, the student would be given a passing grade to the assignment, thereby unlocking the next module/milestone materials.   If they didn't, the coordinator would give feedback via the assignment and invite the student to resubmit.  A bit unorthodox but when I checked in a year later it was working well for them.

There is no requirement for the quiz to be automatically graded, in fact it is merely a series of open ended answers which has no right or wrong answers. Starting in a discussion forum means that the teacher will have to put the questions and then the students will have to respond in a thread by either coping the initial questions and then responding to these or by adding their responses. Unfortunately not great from the user experience point.

There is no requirement to held the responses privately in a group scenario but yes if it is a one-to-one coach vs student interaction. The ungraded assignment would work but only for a one to one situation. How would that work the group scenario?

The example you provided of a medical school is quite useful even though our process is less rigorous than that as there are no additional work for the students to do after submitting responses the first time. However again i cannot see that working for when you have group of students submitting their material to one coach and interacting?

The medical school example has the students working in teams, along with community health professionals at clinics.  If I remember correctly, one team member would submit a document describing who would or had already done what.  The coordinator used a discussion for open conversation with all students and used comments in the speedgrader to give individual feedback and assign grades to individuals which would then unlock the subsequent module.  The students also used groups to coordinate amongst themselves.

Another option to consider would be using a survey in place of a quiz or assignment.

From what i understand, the two areas that wouldn't work from the medical school example for us is that we would have to ask students to work in groups to submit one answer and also in the discussion you wouldn't be able to see what they have responded in the questions unless the teacher copies and pastes it there.

It's like if were able to have a group assignment where the students would be able to submit individual answers to questions and then discuss it between the group members - probably asking for too much :smileylaugh:

Could you advise what's in your mind in regards to using the survey instead of the quiz or assignment?
