Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
New quizzes copying from one course to another is now included on the Feature Comparisons page, but as of this morning, I can't get a new quiz to copy from one course to another. Any updates on why this is still happening? These questions are just text. An earlier new quiz copied just fine. I can't use the work around of copying the quiz bank over and re-assembling the quiz because that quiz bank doesn't show up on my options for selecting specific content. I've put in a ticket but haven't received a response yet.
Hi, Becky,
I noticed your question hadn't received a reply yet. Sorry about that! We've done some improvements for course copy and hope your experience with course copy has been much better lately. Are you still experiencing any behaviors I can check on for you?
Thanks,
Erin
Hi, Becky,
I hope your concerns have been resolved by this point! Please let us know if you have any further questions.
Erin
We are having this issue again - can you please advise?
@erinhmcmillan , I see there are a bunch of responses to this post saying they're experiencing the same problem with importing New Quizzes. You had asked OP if they had further questions, so I'm hoping it's ok to piggy back on that request.
I also got this error and am waiting for support to get back to me, but I'm sure they're swamped. Is there an update on what's happening with importing New Quizzes? Is this bug being addressed, and is there a good workaround other than individually importing each quiz or doing it from scratch?
Thank you!
Hi! I see this was posted in 2020. I'm working on some courses now, in 2022, and having this issue as well. When I copy a quiz over to another course, it copies the "shell" of the quiz but then when I go into Build, the questions haven't been copied over. Even after giving plenty of time for it to load the content over, still no questions. I've been just having to go in and re-enter all of the questions manually. How can I get it to copy the questions over?
I have not done anything important with New Quizzes(I plan on classic quizzes until they are no longer available). Is there not an option in the import content/copy a course to copy over item banks, quiz banks or whatever is associated with new quizzes?
When you copy the quizzes are you using the copy feature? Or are you using a course import? If it is just the copy feature, try the course import to see if that works.
Not sure if any of that helps, but figured I would point out an option that you may or may not have considered.
Hi! I've been doing the "Copy To". It looks like I can't import an individual quiz, I only see the option to import an entire course, which I don't want to do. Is there another way to import an individual assignment?
Hi @JessicaEFreela -
I thought about that after I made my post - I had to go teach. When you are on the copy a course content page, Select the option for "select the content to import".
Then the request is queued with a link next to it that you have to click on to get to the page where you select what you import - you can select individual quizzes and with classic quizzes the question banks. I don't know about new quiz stuff.
here is the instructor guide man page for copying course content from the import content option
here is the overall instructors guide
I am having a similar problem when I try to copy or import a new quiz. When I import a course the quiz comes over with an error. I click retry and it errors again.
When I import just the quiz the title comes over but none of the questions are in the quiz. I can pull them from the item bank again, but then I have to go change the point values for every question and do this for each course that this quiz is used in.
Any reason why it does not copy the questions when importing?
We are having trouble importing between different instances of Canvas and institutions that we partner with that need a common cartridge. We planned to start our migration from classic quizzes to new quizzes this year, but if it doesn't have migration ability between Canvas instances and common cartridge/QTI file migration abilities for other systems, I am hesitant to make that change. I do see that content migration is a focus for December 2020? Hopefully that is when these abilities will be integrated.
Hi! I am having a similar issue. When I copy a quiz from another teacher into a course, only the first 11 questions copy over. I tried copying that same exact quiz to a different course, and the whole thing copies over...
Not working for me, either, even when trying to copy from one of my own courses to another. Here's what it shows me:
Hitting Retry gives me "Oops! That last request didn't work out." If I click on Details, it says "Ajax Error: 400 {"error":"assignment does not exist"}". My only option is to cancel.
We have the same problem! Is there already a solution?
We migrate quizzes in about 20 of our online course masters. We are now having to go through each live course and check the assignments. It appears from the home page as if the quiz came through, but when students attempt the quiz it says they don't have access. When you look under assignments you can see the picture above that suzukj shared, I have 6 seperate sections/courses for one of the course masters. When I looked at the first live section about half of the quizzes did not come in with the import, and I had the option to retry. I was able to retry on all of them, but it took about 30 minutes for them to come through. Once that was done I had to replace them in the modules (they had disappeared from there) and republish. Oh yea, we also noticed that you have to republish the new quizzes when you import them into a course. When I went to the second section I got the error message. Same with the rest of the sections. This is a mess.
I may have found the cause for a part of the problem. I had 6 sections of the course. The fist two sections were imported from the master course sub account. The remaining 4 sections were imported from the previous two sections once they had been updated. When I try the "retry" feature on the remaining 4 sections I get a 400 error. I believe I am getting that error because the sub account that the courses are in do not have the settings allowed for new quizzes.
That still does not explain why some quizzes come through, and others do not. But it is a start.
To fix this issue we had to reimport the individual quizzes from the original master course, rather than the section that they were originally imported from. It appears that when you retry a quiz it changes the assignment id. If you have copied that content into another section, and have to retry (reimport a new quiz) you will not be able to use that feature because the assignment/quiz id has changed. You can import manually from the other section, you just can't use the retry feature.
Same issue here with new quizzes not copying from Commons nor directly between courses. I ended up having to re-create the assessment using the OLD quiz format. So frustrating when I have to do things twice or more.
My faculty cannot copy a new quiz directly between courses. Item banks cannot be shared. I also can't download student responses to a quiz for a faculty member to use for research analysis. Another faculty member has demonstrated that the reports in new quizzes don't seem to be accurate when connected to item banks. The only possible reason for this (to my mind) is that the reports are connected to the item bank and not to the single instance of the quiz in a single course. So many glitches to be resolved for this to actually work for teaching/research.
We are seeing this same issue in our instance. Our team had yet to start tinkering with Quizzes Next but I had to design a new ACT Prep course and built ACT style quizzes and chose Quizzes Next for the platform since I felt the setup resembled what students would see on the ACT exam (reading passage on left, questions on right). That course went live this week.
We have now copied our Master ACT course into our 18 live sections and about half of the Quizzes Next items came through and half failed with the retry or cancel options. I am now "babysitting" all 18 live sections by going into the Master ACT course and using the "Copy to" option to copy the Quizzes Next item into each live section then waiting for 30 mins to an hour to verify the item is actually accessible. The Quizzes Next items that actually do import successfully are unpublished which is another thing I have to manually touch.
I am very disappointed in Quizzes Next at the moment.
I just had quizzes created with the New Quizzes search engine also not import, and clicking on the "Retry" button that appears after trying to process for far too long gained me nothing. This tool is a huge disappointment on many fronts.
The only resolution that I could reach is to go back to the oritinal course, use the optionsmenu to the right of each quiz title, and use the "Copy to . . ." functionality. This did work quite quickly, but it needed to be done individually for each quiz.
I stand corrected . . . it only looked like it worked. When I now try to click on the quiz link, I get a screen that says that it is still copying the assignment along with a never-ending spinning blue circle. This needs a fix!
All,
If you submit a support case, our engineers can get this fixed for you. In reviewing past cases, sometimes the problem relates to your institution's URL, and our engineers can use it to get things working on your end. Hope that helps!
Erin
We experienced the issue, but it appears to be only when the new quiz had been previously copied to the course from the same shell that now has an edited version that needs copying. When copying from a course as a fresh quiz, we haven't yet experienced an issues.
The solution our brilliant teacher found was to copy/import the quiz first to a sandbox, and copy it from there to the real destination. I am not sure how this works into your solution @gouldt of re-copying quizzes from the master shell.
My faculty are importing from a Sandbox and we are still getting this error intermittently and unpredictably. I don't recommend expecting the Sandbox workaround to be a dependable solution.
We experienced the same issue as well. Importing a course that uses the "new" quiz format, will result in errors for every quiz. We upload an advisory course to commons for 60+ teachers. They are all experiencing the error upon import.
We also are experiencing this issue I opened a ticket with Canvas but the only thing they have offered is to rebuild the quiz in the old quiz system. This is happening for all our course and has started suddenly in the last week or so. I am going to have a hard time convincing instructors to use New Quizzes if this is not fixed soon. Has anyone figured out a work around?
We've run into past issues where a course import of a new quiz from Commons or other method got stuck indefinitely. I tested from Commons just now and everything imported for me without issue, but I'm very concerned about these recent reports of errors and that there may be issue as our teachers start importing Commons content from our curriculum teams. Where are you seeing the error, on the Quizzes index list in the course? in the quiz itself?
This is what I had sent our Canvas rep but forgot to post back to this thread. I spun up 7 test sections and did a full course copy to see if I could break these again and this is what I discovered.
New Quizzes will show an error message with retry prompt when it is actually still processing the copy operation. The screenshot below is from the Assignments page after the import. The objects initially appeared with a blue spinning loading wheel indicating they were still copying. After ~15 minutes you can see this error was produced:
If you see this error after a New Quizzes import, then it is most likely still processing the copy operation even though there is nothing to indicate this. Check back in 1-2 hours to see if the New Quizzes item has completed the copy operation. The other bug is that when the New Quizzes item finally imports it will come in as unpublished, which is just something we train our teachers to do in their own sections.
It is two years later, and we are still having this problem. The "solution" does not work for us. We wait for days, and the error persists. We try the "Retry button," wait for a day, and the error remains. We need this solved ASAP. This is rendering New Quizzes un-usable for us. Urgent fix needed.
It's now 2023, 3 years later and I'm experiencing this issue. With Canvas, I'm used to errors lasting for years and years with no resolution.
I am also having this issue- August 2023. When I copy or import a new quiz from one course to another- the new quiz shell comes over, but no questions are there. Most of my questions are in item banks. I chatted with the canvas help line today and they said that I can go in and manually add the item banks to the quiz and basically rebuild the quiz. I have to choose "All banks" on the item banks tab in order to see the item banks from the other course. Also, I had to retype the questions that were not included in an item bank.
Like others have said- this "solution" is not really a solution... It made it so my class was functional today. But it is not really an acceptable answer for the long term. Please fix this!
Still experiencing the same issue. No questions come over when we import new quizzes from a previous course. The workaround is to re-build the quizzes or add them from the question bank. Please advise.
Same here. I have assisted a few faculty with issues related to new quizzes not importing from a copy. I will reach out to my CSM, but wanted to make a note in this thread.
We've encountered several instances of data loss resulting from this issue recently. This is totally unacceptable behavior and I'm perplexed as to how it's still in this shape.
In our situation, an instructor explicitly exported his fully course as an export package for the purpose of performing a backup. He does this regularly. He later reset the course to correct an issue, and the new quizzes imported totally blank. We're out of options to restore the questions and he's very rightfully frustrated.
@rtoon In this case (course reset), it might be possible for an account admin in your instance to restore the deleted course (resetting deletes the existing course, creates a new one, and populates the name & enrollments of the old course into the new one) to get access to the New Quizzes associated with the course before the reset. Then the admin or the teacher (if their enrollment is added back to the restored course) could export the New Quizzes from their Build pages. Good luck!
We’ve tried restoring the reset/deleted course. The questions are no longer associated with the quiz there either.
